{"id":1427,"date":"2010-05-21T17:22:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-21T17:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/actionresearchplus.com\/2010\/05\/21\/theory-and-practice-the-apprentice\/"},"modified":"2016-11-27T12:57:28","modified_gmt":"2016-11-27T12:57:28","slug":"theory-and-practice-the-apprentice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/actionresearchplus.com\/theory-and-practice-the-apprentice\/","title":{"rendered":"Theory and Practice &#8211; The Apprentice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_5KrvLnHSB-c\/S_a_Y-t7KFI\/AAAAAAAAADU\/Qmec8RWc4C8\/s1600\/blog+picture.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_5KrvLnHSB-c\/S_a_Y-t7KFI\/AAAAAAAAADU\/Qmec8RWc4C8\/s320\/blog+picture.jpg\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 <br \/>Having completed my dissertation and graduating in June, naturally I am looking at what is next for me in my life journey.\u00a0 I admit, I have no idea what lays before me.\u00a0 I have searched for some glimmer of the future but never seem to have a clear picture.\u00a0 Times like this, I often turn to tools that may give me some insight into my current situation.\u00a0 I may meditate, write in a journal, and look for repeating \u201csigns\u201d in my daily life.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0An image\/concept I have seen a few times now is the \u201capprentice.\u201d I have taken notice of this image, but I have been confused about how the apprentice relates to me at this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 Yesterday, while teaching my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.uc.edu\/womens_studies\/\">Women and Religion<\/a> class, the image of the apprentice made sense to me.\u00a0 We discussed creativity in relationship to feminist spirituality.\u00a0 I had my students do a quasi-photovoice project.\u00a0 They paired up and walked around the university looking for an object or a scene that represented their understanding and experience of creativity.\u00a0 All of my students had camera phones to take pictures.\u00a0 I did not have a plan on how to share the photos \u2013 I thought we might huddle around and look at each other\u2019s phones.\u00a0 When it came time to discuss, I thought out loud about putting someone\u2019s phone on the document projector to show the pictures.\u00a0 My students said they could just email me their pictures from their phones\u2026GENIUS!!!!! So students emailed their photos, and I projected them on the screen through the computer.\u00a0 Not only were the students technologically wise, the words and images they produced were profound and transformative. \u00a0They brought the concepts of creativity and spirituality to life with image and words. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 So what does this have to do with being an apprentice and action research?\u00a0 Yesterday in class reminded me that even though I am the facilitator of the classroom experience, I continuously learn from the people around me.\u00a0 The class was better yesterday because my students took ownership of creating knowledge and of our technological needs to create a place for sharing.\u00a0 When I looked at the apprentice image, I had forgotten to look at in relationship to all of my roles, the people around me, and my experience of action research.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 Action research welcomes me into the role of <a href=\"http:\/\/arj.sagepub.com\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/5\/3\/265\">being and doing<\/a>, continuously learning my trade \u2013 whatever that may be.\u00a0 The apprentice challenges me to continue to learn and grow in community.\u00a0 An apprentice is not an isolated individual \u2013 but a person that works with others.\u00a0 I am thankful that I took notice of the \u201csign.\u201d \u00a0I am now playing with the idea of how to be an apprentice and a master at the same time.\u00a0 A paradox that honors the hard work and knowledge I have generated and the experience of continuing to learn and grow from community \u2013 in all of its formations. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Having completed my dissertation and graduating in June, naturally I am looking at what is next for me in my life journey.\u00a0 I admit, I have no idea what lays before me.\u00a0 I have searched for some glimmer of the future but never seem to have a clear picture.\u00a0 Times like this, I often [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":48,"featured_media":1612,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[54,252],"tags":[455,564,775,729],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.6 -
