towards a shared place identity as sociological intervention by Laura Ripoll Gonzalez
Have you ever wondered how diverse communities can come together to create a shared vision for their region guiding action? Laura Ripoll Gonzalez’ recent study explores this fascinating process through the lens of the Muntanya d’Alacant region in Spain, which is currently undergoing a regional development process as part of the EU LEADER program. Laura explains…
“Our research highlights the transformative potential of Sociological Intervention (SI) as an action research method rooted in sociology and social movement theory. SI provides a reflective space where local actors can share their experiences and reconcile individual and collective values associated with their place. This approach is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by contested identities and value conflicts that often hinder governance and cooperation.
In the Muntanya d’Alacant case, SI facilitated deeper engagement with the emotional and embodied dimensions of place identity, strengthening connections and shared goals among stakeholders. By leveraging place identity as a governance tool, SI can align actors around shared goals and catalyze sustainability transformations.
One of the most interesting aspects of our study is how it emphasizes the significance of a sense of belonging and shared purpose as prerequisites for bringing actors together, building trust, enabling cooperation, and driving collective action. These are key elements for sustainable societal change.
Our findings suggest that by creating spaces for critical reflection and transformation of relationships among actors, SI can help reconfigure social dynamics to enhance self-organization and promote collective action. This approach not only supports the development of inclusive and actionable place-based governance but also contributes to broader ideas like inclusion, access, democracy, and shared power.
We reflect on how we can foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose in our local contexts and what steps we can take to ensure that diverse voices are heard and valued in the governance process.”
