Education for New Immigrant Workers and Tools to Develop Occupational Health and Safety
Canada based action researchers, Chen and colleagues, published their action research paper with ARJ on supporting immigrants to better health and safety. They explain:
“Canada’s economy thrives on the hard work of immigrant workers, but they often face big challenges when it comes to staying safe and happy at work. Issues like language barriers, poor training, and discrimination make their jobs risky. To tackle this, we created special safety training modules just for immigrant workers.
We worked with nine immigrant workers over three months in online sessions, listening to their stories and figuring out the main problems. They told us about not getting proper safety training, not knowing their rights, being scared to report safety issues, and facing discrimination.
Based on their real-life experiences, we together made five easy-to-understand learning modules covering important safety information, psychological risks, Canadian workplace norms, communication, and available resources. These tools are practical and relatable, especially for newcomers.
We are passionate about making workplaces safer for immigrant workers and believe these modules can help a lot. How can we improve safety education for immigrant workers even more? What problems have you seen? Your feedback is super important in making our workplaces safer and happier.
Please share your thoughts and help us ensure workers a safe and healthy work environment, no matter where they come from.
